With Thursday night's filing deadline it is off to the races for candidates vying for city and school board elected offices in Trotwood. Some familiar names and some new ones will pepper the November ballot.
Current Mayor Donald McLaurin is running for reelection. Two current city council members Darreyl Davis and Joyce Sutton Cameron are challenging him.
Also on the ballot this fall are two at-large seats on the council bench. Barbara Staggs is seeking reelection along with four newcomers. Getting their filings complete by the deadline were Bettye Gales, Hampton Johnson Jr, Mark Landis, and Freeman Ward. Besides Trotwood, several other area communities are lining up candidates for city council. Centerville, Miamisburg, Oakwood, and Riverside each have at least 5 candidates in their races.
On the Trotwood-Madison school board Vanessa Jeter-Freeman and Craig Ross are both running unopposed for re-election. The county board of elections will review the petition signatures in the next few days and expects to certify candidates as soon as next week.

Campaign Contributions Map
The New York Times published this interesting map that shows where campaign donations came from for each candidate. I thought I would share it here since it seems Dayton has been spreading its money around and shows up on almost every candidate's map.

9 Running For Mayor and Council
More Expected Before August Deadline
With four months to go before the 2007 petition deadline, nine Trotwood residents have already picked up the necessary paperwork from the county board of elections. “This is the earliest I can remember this many candidates coming forward,” said Bonnie Schenk.
Others beyond the nine have shown interest in running this year so expect the November ballot to get even longer.
This year voters will be asked to choose the mayor, two at-large city council seats, and two school board members. No petitions for school board have been picked up as of April 6.
Trotwood Mayor Donald McLaurin has indicated that he does not plan to run for re-election. Two city council members (both members of the Trotwood Democratic Club) are on the list: Darreyl Davis (his at-large seat expires this year) and Joyce Sutton Cameron (representing Ward 2 with two years remaining on her term). Ms. Cameron currently serves as Vice-Mayor.
Two republicans have also taken out petitions; Mark Landis and Emanuel Funso.
Club member Barbara Staggs is running for re-election to her at-large council seat. Four challengers with no listed party affiliation have taken out petitions. They are; Mary Dean Dixon, Nikki Edmonds, Freeman Ward, and Deirdre Williams.
Staggs, who has served since 1991 said she recalls there being five candidates for these offices in the past but never this early.
Lets learn about all these candidates so we can make an informed decision on whom the club should endorse in August. The deadline to file completed petitions is August 23rd.
